'Greatest ever moment on Irish radio' leaves people 'crying with laughter' every time they hear it

A man has resurrected the ‘greatest ever moment on Irish radio’ on Twitter and it has been leaving people in stitches - those who remember listening in live, and people who were witnessing the comedy gold for the first time.

The clip featuring ex-BBC Radio host, Gerry Anderson - who was renowned for his style of presenting and for his distinctive sense of humour - has since gone viral alongside an animation of the moment on air, created by Flicker Pix.

The Tweet said, “This is one of the funniest pieces of live radio you’ll ever hear. And the animation adds an extra layer."

It tells the story of a caller ringing into Gerry on BBC Radio Ulster to tell him he had tried a trick he had mentioned on air with one of his hens - but things quickly went from bad to worse while live on air.

According to the presenter, a day prior they had been speaking about how a hen can be hypnotized, or put into a trance, with its head down near the ground, by drawing a line along the floor with a piece of chalk, starting at the beak and extending straight outward in front of the chicken.

He explained: “We were talking yesterday about a man who used to go around schools and he used to bring a hen into the classroom.

“And he would display to the children what a strange and wonderful world this is, and what he would do is, he would get a piece of chalk and he’d draw a long straight line on the floor, then he’d put the hen down on its side so its eye would look along the white line.

“The hen would never move unless someone came into his line of vision or broke the line.”

The caller went on to say he had done this with one of his hens, and that it had been in a trance for nearly 25 hours.

He said she was a laying hen and hadn’t laid any eggs that day, but he could feel there was one there so was asking Gerry how to “get her out of this.”

To which the presenter advised: “Well if I were you, I think the logical way to approach this would be to get yourself some kind of a wet cloth and start at the end of it and start rubbing it out.”

The man followed his advice, and chaos quickly ensued as the hen awoke from its trance screaming, trashed the house, and smashed through the window to get away - leaving live listeners both in shock and hysterics laughing.

The reminiscent sketch has since left people in stitches once again as one listener responded by saying: “I've watched it twice and am crying laughing.”

Another said: “I'd safely say that this is in the all-time Top 3 of the funniest things I've ever seen (or heard). Absolutely superb. My whole family were obsessed with the original recordings, amazing! The animations add another layer of brilliance.”

A third wrote: “That is absolutely tremendous - the Child of Prague floored me. The animation is just wonderful as well. Fantastic.”

While a fourth said: “When Gerry was hanging on the phone waiting for the guy to rub out the line, it was like very early Baker. No rush, we’ll wait. Hilarious”
