Greater Manchester weather forecast this week as UK braced for coldest day of the year

The country is preparing for another arctic snap this week as meteorologists warned to brace for the coldest day of the year so far.

Temperatures are due to plummet across the UK, as the Met Office issued a yellow warning of snow for some parts of the North of England in the coming days.

It seems that whilst Greater Manchester will narrowly miss out on snowfall, freezing conditions and minus temperatures are likely to be felt across the region.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather alert and placed north-west England and Yorkshire under a level 3 alert, meaning there is a 90% chance of severely cold weather, icy conditions or heavy snow, which could increase the health risk to vulnerable people. The rest of the UK has been placed under level 2.

Temperatures could drop as low -4 degrees celsius in parts of Greater Manchester on Tuesday night, with the forecast unlikely to get far above freezing over the coming days.

A yellow warning of snow has been issued by the Met Office for snow and ice in parts of North Yorkshire, Northumbria, and Scotland.

Here is the weather forecast for Greater Manchester this week.

Monday

Patchy cloud and showers through the morning, the showers perhaps wintry in places, especially over the hills. Turning brighter into the afternoon with a mix of sunny spells and some snow showers.

Feeling particularly cold around the coast, where breezy. Maximum temperature 7 °C. Minimum overnight temperature -1 °C.

Tuesday

After a frosty start, a bright day with plenty of sunshine though remaining chilly. Breezy near to the coast, and a chance of the odd snow shower developing here too. Maximum temperature 6 °C. Minimum overnight temperature -4°C.

Wednesday

Mostly dry with some sunshine on Wednesday, after a frosty start. Cloudier and breezier thereafter with a chance of some rain or snow. Gradually turning less cold.

Maximum day time temperature 3°C and minimum temperature overnight expected to be around -2°C.

Thursday

Cloudier and breezier thereafter with a chance of some rain or snow. Gradually turning less cold. Maximum day time temperature 4°C and minimum night time temperature 0°C.

Friday - Sunday

On Friday, very cold conditions are expected across the far north, accompanied by snow showers, although some sunny spells are possible away from any showers.

Elsewhere, milder, cloudier conditions are likely, with outbreaks of rain and some stronger winds possible. There is a small chance of more disruptive snowfall, particularly over hills.

Into the weekend, milder conditions are expected to spread northeastwards, bringing rain and stronger winds, as well as some snow along the leading edge.

Towards the end of the period, this transition is expected to continue, bringing some more unsettled conditions. Periods of snow remain possible, particularly in the far north.

Temperatures generally below average, but may gradually turn milder into the end of the period.
