Great North Run – what is the cut-off deadline for deferring entry?

The Great North Run takes place next Sunday (September 11), one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. Some of the world’s biggest names in athletics will be joined by 60,000 fun-runners along the streets of Newcastle and Gateshead.

2022 sees a return to the run’s traditional route, which means that South Shields is back in on the party too. It promises to be a fun-filled day for runners and spectators alike.

There is an important deadline coming up before the race that fun-runners will need to know. It relates to the cut-off point for deferring entry.

What is deferring entry?

If you decide not to run, you are entitled to withdraw your place and receive an opportunity to buy a guaranteed place into the following year’s event.

What are the rules about deferring entry?

The Great North Run website says the following about deferring entry:

“If the entrant subsequently decides not to run and doesn’t apply for a medical refund, they are entitled to withdraw their place and receive an opportunity to buy a guaranteed place into the following year’s event without having to apply through the ballot system. A refund will not be given and the guaranteed place for the subsequent year will be subject to the standard entry fee.

“Once the entrant has committed to withdraw their entry they cannot be reinstated into the event. All requests to withdraw entry must be made no later than 6pm on the day before the event . No withdrawals will be made retrospectively.

“We would contact you via email in November with instructions of how to register and pay for the guaranteed entry into the following year’s event. Customers who wish to withdraw their entry must complete the online form.

So what do I need to do?

No later than 6pm on September 10, you need to withdraw your entry for the 2022 race. That way, you can defer to next year.

But beware: once an entrant has committed to withdraw their entry they cannot be reinstated into the event. If you receive your race number after you have withdrawn your entry there is no need to return it – you must destroy it.

The official website adds: “In order to secure your guaranteed place in 2023, you must meet the deadlines outlined in the withdrawal process and pay the entry fee for the 2023 event.”
