Fire crews have brought a grassfire burning on Melbourne's north-west fringe under control, with at least one building damaged by the blaze at Bulla.

Authorities had warned residents to leave, but just after 5pm the threat was downgraded and residents of the area were told they could "resume normal activities".

The fire was travelling from Loemans Road in a northerly direction towards Bulla and aerial footage showed damage to at least one building.

Emergency services are expected to remain in the area for another couple of hours, and warned smoke would be visible in nearby communities and roads.

Dozens of vehicles responded to the emergency, which was reported just after 3pm.

Ambulance Victoria was called to the scene where paramedics assessed six people, including an infant, but no treatment was required.
