The Boston Celtics traded away restricted free agent Grant Williams, sending the Charlotte native to the Dallas Mavericks in a sign-and-trade deal. In return, the Celtics acquired two second-round picks with the San Antonio Spurs absorbing the salary of Reggie Bullock for an unrestricted 2030 first round pick swap as a sweetener for facilitating the deal.
The trade also generates Boston a $6.2 million traded player exception and saves the Celtics $40 million in tax. The decision to trade Williams may have been influenced by a roster crunch and the desire to maintain future flexibility should a major move need to be made in case of a great opportunity — or a disaster — arising unexpectedly.
