Grandfather killed in unprovoked attack days after murderer had been released on bail

  • Rasheed Rahman, a teenager with known mental health issues, murdered 55-year-old grandfather Mark Carroll in an unprovoked knife attack in St Martins Gardens, Camden , north London, on 10 April.
  • Rahman had been released on police bail twice in the days leading up to the murder, following arrests for allegedly assaulting members of the public with a boat hook and smashing a church window with a brick.
  • The attacker obtained the five-inch knife from his supported living accommodation, where residents were required to sign out sharp objects, and failed to return it before using it to fatally stab Mr Carroll in the back.
  • Following the murder, Rahman threatened two other individuals with the weapon before being apprehended, leading to his conviction for murder, robbery, and other knife offences at Wood Green Crown Court.
  • Mark Carroll's family, supported by the Hundred Families charity, are demanding answers regarding the systemic failures that allowed Rahman, who was known to mental health services, to commit the violent crime, prompting a Metropolitan Police investigation into their prior contact with him.
