Grand plans for future of 'forgotten' town that was once a 'dirty word'

A live music venue in Wirral is helping to drive a cultural rebirth in one of the borough's "forgotten" towns.

Future Yard, in Birkenhead, announced its arrival last year by daubing the words "The Future is Birkenhead" in giant letters on the front of its building. Though the motto is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, a desire to implement positive change in the town is central to the ethos of the Argyle Street venue.

Christopher Torpey, one of Future Yard's four co-founders, told the ECHO : “It's a very long process because you don’t make the big seismic changes we’re hoping to make in a 12-month period. We’re hoping to change people’s attitudes from across the region who have different perceptions of what Birkenhead is.
