Grand National 2023: All the items banned from Aintree racecourse

The highly anticipated Grand National returns this week with many racegoers feeling the excitement.

Attending the huge event can take a lot of planning, particularly around outfits and travel. Some may even consider taking in supplies like their own alcohol or food, but there are always strict rules in place as to what you can bring past the ticket barriers.

This year, there is plenty of advice and guidance on what you can actually take on to the race course. The list also includes some items that are strictly prohibited.

Grand National 2023 prohibited items

According to The Jockey Club FAQ’s, attendees cannot take any food, drink, glass bottles or glasses onto any part of the racecourse. Picnics are allowed, but must be consumed within the designated picnic areas.

Bottles/cartons including soft drinks must be sealed on entry to the premises. Unsealed bottles will be refused entry or swapped for a sealed bottle of water.

It's also advised for people to only take a small bag to the venue, ensuring no prohibited items are inside it. Guidance on The Jockey Club's website states: "Customers are being advised not to bring a bag larger than a small handbag (30cm x 10cm x 20cm) with them.

"Please be aware that there will be no left luggage facility on site. Bringing a bag will further delay your entry to the racecourse and we, therefore, encourage you not to bring any bags or prohibited items to the racecourse."

Other banned items include:

  • Flags, banners and other articles and any behaviour which may distract or frighten the horses

  • Unauthorised small unmanned aircraft, drones, aerial systems or vehicles that have not been authorised in writing

  • Any item which may be used for any marketing or promotional activity whatsoever which has not been authorised

  • Fancy dress unless within certain authorised enclosures

  • Offensive clothing and slogans

  • Non medicinal drugs, narcotics and other illegal substances;

  • Furniture in any form, including camping stools and other forms of seating not provided by the Racecourse

Aintree racecourse operates on a ‘cashless’ basis, including concessions. However, cash may be used when placing bets with all on-course bookmakers.

The Randox Grand National 2023 will take place from Thursday, April 13 to Saturday, April 15. It is held at Aintree racecourse.
