Gran shares 'game-changing' Christmas tree hack to minimise mess

A gran has shared a simple way to reduce mess whilst having your Christmas tree up that only takes a couple of seconds to do.

While Christmas trees are the pinnacle of the season and they look great covered in lights and baubles, they can be a nightmare because of all the mess they generate - from falling pine needles to pieces of wood from the trunk.

But "everyone's grandmother" Babs on TikTok, also known as @Brunchwithbabs, has revealed how you can keep any mess to a minimum and enjoy the season without worrying about any unsightly tree debris.

Babs has racked up an impressive 2.9 million followers on the video sharing app thanks to her wise advice and lifestyle hacks she often shares.

And with Christmas just around the corner, she's been busy helping people prepare for the festive season if they're hosting family and friends, or if they just want some helpful DIY tips.

One of her recent videos about Christmas trees has proven to be very popular, with over 300,000 likes.

In the clip, she talks about how to achieve the "perfect" tree with five simple steps - but one in particular stood out and there's still time to do it.

After selecting her tree, she said: "Now's the time to think about that Christmas tree bag.

"Take a disposable Christmas tree bag, fold it in half - next you're going to cut the corner and place the hole over the tree trunk."

Then, showing the Christmas tree now upright in her home with the bag at the bottom, Babs added: "You know the skirt's going to hide all this.

"At the end of the season, this is going to lift right over your tree and it's going to save your house from a huge mess."

You don't need a specific Christmas tree bag to do this - just any large piece of plastic or a carrier bag will suffice.

In the same video, some of Babs' other tips included measuring the height of your ceiling before choosing a tree - the ideal one should be up to a foot and a half shorter.

She also suggested laying down a tablecloth before putting up your tree, as it will absorb any spills.

Although Christmas trees are a personal choice, Babs recommended either a Balsam or Frasier fir because of how long they last within the home. She also suggested giving the trunk a fresh cut right before putting it up, which will enable it to "drink" the water better.

Finally, the gran urged people to put the Christmas tree in the stand outside before putting it in the house - saving you from having to crawl under all the branches and trying to make it straight.

In the comments, people thanked Babs for her "motherly" advice on all things Christmas trees.

One person said: "Bless this woman who doesn't gate keep knowledge."

A second commented: "I didn't know there was such a thing as a Christmas tree bag! I learn so much from your videos, thanks!"

And another said: "All the years I had to crawl UNDER the tree to secure the stand when I could have done it outside!"

"Christmas tree bag?! Game changer", a fourth penned.
