Grammys CEO responds after BTS announces boycott

  • K-pop group BTS announced they would not submit their music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, saying they hope music is judged universally rather than by region or language following the introduction of the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category.
  • Grammys chief executive Harvey Mason Jr expressed sadness but respect for BTS's decision, while defending the newly introduced category.
  • Mason clarified that the Asian Pop category aims to celebrate and expand recognition for Asian artists, not to divide them from more prestigious General Field categories like Record or Album of the Year.
  • He emphasised that submitting music in a genre category does not exclude an artist from also being considered in the General Field categories, allowing artists to pursue both.
  • BTS has previously received five Grammy nominations, but no wins, and their decision follows similar criticisms and boycotts of the awards by other prominent artists such as The Weeknd and Drake.
