Graham Potter understands ‘upset and angry’ Chelsea fans after latest loss

Graham Potter admitted Chelsea fans have every right to be "upset and angry", as pressure on him intensified following yesterday's 2-0 defeat against Tottenham.

Potter admitted he does not have much credit in the bank at Chelsea after a third consecutive loss left the Blues closer to the relegation zone than the top four. The Blues are now 14 points adrift of the Champions League places and a section of supporters have turned on Potter.

Co-owner Todd Boehly was present yesterday to see Chelsea slump to a defeat that leaves them just 10 points above the bottom three. Potter has retained the support of Chelsea's owners but it remains to be seen how long they can keep faith in him.

Chelsea's season is now likely to rest on their performance in the Champions League. They trail Borussia Dortmund 1-0 from the first leg in Germany and disappointment in the second leg next week would further test the patience of the owners.

"Our supporters have been very fair," said Potter. "They have supported the team. I have no complaints with the supporters. They are entitled to be frustrated, upset, and angry with the results we have got and that is my responsibility. I have absolutely no complaints with the supporters."

Asked if he is worried the club's support for him might waver, Potter said: "There is always that question, absolutely, and you can't stop the questions. While results are what they are, I accept it, it's part of the job."

Chelsea have scored just one goal in their past six games and struggled to create chances against Spurs, who scored second-half goals through Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane.

Potter added: "I can feel that they [the players] want the results to change around — they do. It's not from a lack of effort or desire to do it. We are in a tough situation and moment.

"The results haven't been kind to us. I think our performances have been better than our results, but while you are in this bit it feels whatever you do, you end up on the receiving end. It's tough for them, us and the supporters — who I thought were fantastic with us again today. We have to keep going, keep working and believe in [the idea] that things can change around."

Ahead of two crucial home fixtures against Leeds on Saturday and then Dortmund next Tuesday, Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly has urged the squad to stick together.

"It is tough for everyone right now," he said. "For the players, for the supporters, but we must stick together and we are going to work really hard to get out of this situation. We have two big games coming up at Stamford Bridge and we need to work hard and prepare for those now."
