Graham Potter sent £10m Chelsea reminder as Kai Havertz patience vindicated in Leicester win

Graham Potter has a wealth of Chelsea attackers at his disposal and perhaps for the first time in 2023, the Blues head coach faces a number of difficult team selection decisions up front. Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk have all contributed to the five goals Chelsea have scored in the last week.

The Blues secured their third consecutive victory with an impressive win away to Leicester, scoring more goals in those 90 minutes than they managed in the month of February. Scoring goals was seemingly becoming a major issue for Graham Potter and his team, as was the case during his tenure at Brighton, but six goals from their last three games certainly indicate otherwise.

A narrow victory over Leeds last weekend, where Wesley Fofana scored from a set-piece, left many of the belief finding the back of the net would still be an issue. However, in crucial wins over Borussia Dortmund and Leicester, four different players found the back of the net.

What will likely be most pleasing to Potter was the fact Havertz was able to score in back-to-back games for the first time since late October. Owen Hargreaves was also impressed by the display of the 23-year-old, naming him as the best player in the wins over Dortmund and Leicester.

“Three goals [against Leicester]… Kai Havertz was the best player again [on Saturday] and he was [also] the best player in midweek against Borussia Dortmund," he said (via Optus Sport).

“I know he [Graham Potter] doesn’t have a centre-forward but Havertz has done a pretty good job of filling in.”

Raheem Sterling was also among the goals in mid-week while Mykhailo Mudryk set up Mateo Kovacic for his goal at King Power Stadium. Hakim Ziyech and Noni Madueke are also both still in the first-team picture but have struggled when handed opportunities in recent weeks.

So many attacking options has seen many forget about David Datro Fofana. Despite a promising cameo against Southampton last month, where the January signing was handed his first Chelsea start, the 20-year-old has been omitted from the last three Premier League matchday squads.

Fofana has certainly been doing his best to ensure he is not forgotten by Potter and his staff with his performance in Premier League 2 for Chelsea. A goal behind to Liverpool, Fofana showed his quality in front of goal finishing a delightful move with a calm side-footed finish that nestled in the back of the net off the post.

The Blues went on to win the game 3-1 with Fofana impressing alongside academy stars previously involved in first-team ongoings such as Harvey Vale and Lewis Hall. However, Potter will not want to tinker with his front line at the moment unless he has too.

Havertz has seemingly entered some long-awaited goal scoring form but if Fofana can keep up these performances he could be soon knocking on Potter's door for a first-team appearance.
