Graham Potter handed huge Chelsea setback as Wesley Fofana limps off injured vs AC Milan

Wesley Fofana hobbled off injured in the first half of Chelsea's Champions League group stage clash with AC Milan. The 21-year-old defender, who opened the scoring for the Blues at Stamford Bridge, was brought off for Trevoh Chalobah.

Ironically, the Blues' summer signing was caught in an altercation with transfer target Rafael Leao. The Portugal international was chasing down the Frenchman before he fell to the floor, clutching his knee.

Fofana soldiered on for a few moments before eventually falling to the ground, signalling to be brought off. The centre-back's exit was met with applause from the home support following his effort earlier in the tie, which put Chelsea ahead.

The former Leicester City defender has an unfortunate history of injuries. Before penning a deal at Stamford Bridge, he suffered a major fibula fracture injury that kept him out of action for seven months.

Ahead of Fofana's arrival, medical expert Ben Dinnery spoke to Football Insider to discuss the extent of the Frenchman's medical history. He said: "The biggest injury was the fracture-dislocation of his ankle. He returned from that long-term problem and helped shore up that Leicester defence. There were some outstanding performances when you consider the serious nature of the injury."

Graham Potter has been tipped to transform Fofana into a 'superstar' due to the 47-year-old's rich history of developing players. Speaking on Sky Sports News upon the former Brighton boss' arrival, former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson said: "He [Potter] improves players.

"You look at what he did at Brighton, they weren't superstars when he took over, but they are now. Wesley Fofana coming in is a great signing. He's a young centre-half, he's only going to get better with time, and Graham Potter is only going to improve him."
