Graham Potter has explained why Raheem Sterling is absent from the Chelsea squad to play Newcastle United. The 27-year-old has been a frequent feature in the Blues side since joining from Manchester City in the summer.
The England international has featured 12 times for the west Londoners in the Premier League this season, directly contributing towards four goals. Sterling, who sees his contract at Stamford Bridge expire in 2027, impressed in the early stages of his Chelsea career though he's since struggled to recapture his best form.
Despite a turbulent start to life at his new club, Sterling was called up to the Three Lions squad to represent England at the World Cup. But, Gareth Southgate has been handed a late blow with the forward out of Chelsea's final clash before the tournament commences later this month.

Speaking to Chelsea's in-house media team, Potter explained why Sterling has not travelled with the squad to Tyneside in what is set to be a blockbuster bout. The Blues boss said: "Raheem missed training yesterday with a bit of sickness. It's nothing serious for Raheem, some migraines and he was unable to travel!"
With the World Cup just around the corner, Sterling has been tipped to play a key role in England's success this winter. Speaking to the BBC, Micah Richards said: "I still rate Raheem very highly but he looks a little lost. It's like he is a bit frustrated in terms of Chelsea's set-up and, tactically, does not know what they want him to do.
"After a manager signs you and says you are their top guy, like [Thomas] Tuchel did with Sterling, it must be frustrating when a new manager comes in and wants to use you differently," the former Manchester City defender added. "Every player just wants to have some stability. I think he is in good hands with Potter - let's make that clear - but it is down to him to get the best out of Sterling now."
James Maddison also sent Gareth Southgate an injury scare after being substituted during Leicester City's clash with West Ham. But, The Foxes boss has clarified that the midfielder is in fact okay.
Speaking to BBC5 Live, Brendan Rodgers said: "Precautionary… He’s okay."
