Graeme Shinnie wants Aberdeen permanent transfer but captain names hurdles that need 'dealt with' to seal switch

Graeme Shinnie wants to return to Aberdeen next season and lead them back into Europe.

The midfielder netted two goals in the 3-0 win over St Mirren that saw the Dons clinch third spot. Shinnie is currently on-loan from crisis club Wigan Athletic and will hold talks over the last year of his contract but insisted he wants to be back at Pittodrie – if a deal can be struck. Shinnie, when asked if he would like an Aberdeen return, admitted: “That is a bit obvious.

“It’s one of those, let’s see what happens. I can’t say anything here or there because it is still up in the air. We still have the season to finish and that is what I am focusing on and then we can sort it out and we will see what happens.” Wigan have just been relegated to England’s League One and look set to face a transfer embargo for the late payment of wages.

It is likely to open the door for the Latics to get one of their bigger earners off the books. The 31-year-old is in his second spell at Pittodrie. Shinnie admitted it is a club he loves and feels like home for him.

There could also be the added carrot of guaranteed European group stage football until Christmas, if Celtic lift the Scottish Cup. Shinnie added: “I love it here and it feels like home here. I am captain and I love the club.

“You can see that with the passion I have for the club but we will wait and see. We still have one game to go and then I will have a holiday with my wife and two kids to switch off for a bit. “We will then see what happens.

“There is stuff to be dealt with, in terms of where I will be. That will be dealt with over the summer. “Right now, I am a Wigan player at the end of the loan spell. We will wait and see.”

Barry Robson has already lined up a move for Livingston defender Nicky Devlin and is looking to add further. He is also keen to keep several of his other loan players, including Liam Scales, Leighton Clarkson and Mattie Pollock.
