Graeme Shinnie makes emotional Aberdeen return on loan

Aberdeen have signed former captain Graeme Shinnie on loan until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has returned to the North East from Wigan.

The midfielder previously played for the club between 2015 and 2019.

He captained the Pittodrie outfit just prior to the Scottish Cup final in 2017.

He left at the end of the 2018/29 season as he headed for Derby County after making 188 appearances for the club.

He then joined Wigan last January on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Now, he's back on familiar territory as Jim Goodwin looks to bolster his squad ahead of the second-half of the campaign.

A club statement reads: "Aberdeen FC is very pleased to confirm former captain Graeme Shinnie will be returning to Pittodrie on loan until the end of the season.

"Graeme signed on a pre-contract agreement in January 2015 and officially joined Aberdeen in that summer from Inverness Caley Thistle.

"During his four-year spell at Pittodrie the 31-year-old played in three cup finals."

Goodwin added: "Graeme is a player who knows the club well, he is aware of the level of expectation here and despite being away from Pittodrie for a few years he obviously still has close connections with the place and a number of the staff.

“He has great leadership qualities and will bring a wealth of experience to the squad.

“We look forward to working with him in the coming months.”

Shinnie will be available to face St Johnstone this weekend.

The big games keep on coming for the Dons afterwards, with a semi-final contest against Rangers at Hampden next up.

Goodwin further boosted his midfield options with the additon of Patrik Myslovič too.

He will join from MSK Zilina initially on loan, subject to successful completion of the UK immigration process, with the Dons retaining an exclusive option to acquire the player this summer.
