Graduates could face a tougher path into employment as artificial intelligence takes over tasks traditionally assigned to junior staff, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned. Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said AI could affect around 40% of jobs worldwide, raising concerns about how young people will gain their first professional experience as employers adopt the technology.
Speaking in Bangkok on 12 October, Georgieva described AI as a slow-moving tsunami. She warned that young people entering the workforce could face particular challenges as businesses introduce technology capable of performing routine tasks. The concern is not simply that AI could replace certain tasks. Employers may also need fewer junior employees to perform work that has traditionally helped graduates gain experience and progress into more senior positions.
