At almost nine years old the Great Dane cross, Avril, has been at the RSPCA Hunter Shelter for more than 100 days.
The RSPCA is hoping dogs like Avril have a shot at finding their "forever home" with their cupcake fundraiser and free adoption promotion from August 29 to September 15.
The Rutherford-based shelter is holding Cupcake Day on Friday September 6 and Saturday September 7 from 9.30 am to raise money for their shelter and their associated support group.
Another cupcake fundraiser will also be at Maitland Bunnings from 9am on Saturday September 14.
RSPCA Hunter shelter manager Ellie Siemsen said there will be lots of human and dog friendly treats on offer while potential adopters meet available dogs.
There were currently 31 dogs at the shelter, with quite a few being younger dogs, Ms Siemsen said.
"Just come on down and really just have a look at one of our dogs and just chat to us," she said.
"We always want to get them out of the shelter as soon as possible and into a forever home."
Funds raised will go towards additional treats, toys and surgeries and the support group which provide community support such as subsidised de-sexing and emergency veterinary treatment.
Ms Siemsen said the state-wide free adoption was due to a large anonymous donation to the RSPCA.
RSPCA NSW local branch manager Josh O'Donnell said the RSPCA Hunter supporter group helped people care for their pets if they fell on hard times.
"They provide care and support for animals in care in the shelter but also support animals in the community," he said.
He said the fundraising events were a great way for the community to come together and support a worthwhile cause.
"We all know how much companionship and love animals bring and everyone deserves to have an animal in their lives," he said.
