Home Ministry designates JeM commander ‘terrorist’ under UAPA

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday designated Ashiq Ahmed Nengroo — alleged commander of proscribed outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) — as a “terrorist” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Nengroo, who is from Pulwama, has been accused of being involved in the infiltration of terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir, who have been responsible for various terror-related activities in the Union Territory.

“...after running a terror syndicate in Kashmir, the said Ashiq Ahmed Nengroo is now engaged in a perilous campaign to orchestrate terror in Jammu and Kahmir, remote controlled from Pakistan,” said an MHA gazette notification.

The notification said Nengroo was involved in the cases related to killing of one police personnel in Pulwama in 2013, killing of a civilian in 2020, terror funding and illegal supply of weapons to terrorists.

The MHA has so far designated 36 individuals as terrorists under the UAPA.
