Government Ministers are set to make a move to help ease the cost of fuel as prices have soared in recent days.
A number of stations were selling petrol and diesel at more than €2 a litre as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
A senior Government source has said it’s likely there will be movement on excise duty that will see cuts to fuel costs.
Energy Minister Eamon Ryan should make the announcement with Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe on Wednesday.
Sources have told the Irish Mirror that the Government will cut 20 cent off excise duty on petrol and diesel.
It’s expected the changes will take effect from midnight on Wednesday night if the proposal is passed by the Dáil.
An incorporeal Cabinet meeting is due to be held on Wednesday as Government Ministers discussed how they may relieve financial pressures in households at their Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
It’s understood the Bill will outline a reduction in cents per litre and this could be up to 20 cent.
In the Dáil Sinn Fein called on the Government to bring in a 25 cent per litre cut in the Dáil on Thursday.
Mary Lou McDonald said: “At the pumps we can get prices down by 25 cent per litre immediately by cutting excise duty.”
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said a European Commission paper would be ready in the next day or two, which he indicated could allow for a reduction in fuel costs.
He told the Dáil: "We will have to look outside the norm, outside the box, in dealing with the crisis.”
