Improving access to legal services will be the focus of an independent review launched by the federal government.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said the review of the $2.4 billion National Legal Assistance Partnership would be led by former productivity commissioner Dr Warren Mundy.

“Legal assistance is essential to ensuring access to justice and equality before the law, especially for vulnerable people facing disadvantage,” Mr Dreyfus said in Brisbane on Friday.

The partnership between the federal, state and territory governments funds services delivered by legal aid commissions, community legal centres, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal services.

It is due to expire in 2025 and the review – which will be completed by early 2024 – will consider how future arrangements could better provide access for justice.
