Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a potential Democratic vice presidential nominee, criticized former President Donald Trump for hesitating to commit to debating Vice President Kamala Harris until a Democratic nominee is confirmed. Shapiro asserted in a video posted on X that Trump is apprehensive and unwilling to face off against Vice President Harris.
Shapiro suggested that Trump's reluctance stems from fear, indicating that he can no longer evade accountability for his past actions. Reports have indicated that Shapiro is a top contender as Harris considers her choice for a running mate in the coming weeks.
Trump's communications director, Steven Cheung, released a statement on Thursday stating that it would be premature to schedule events with Harris due to the possibility of Democratic nominee changes. Despite Harris securing ample delegate support to become the Democratic nominee, the official nomination process is expected to commence on August 1, following the adoption of party rules on Wednesday.
