Violence in Mexico has surged dramatically following the killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). His death at the hands of the Mexican military triggered retaliatory attacks in several states, prompting authorities to respond to escalating unrest.
In response, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a major increase in security along the Texas-Mexico border and across the state. The move, carried out by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), is designed to strengthen public safety and prevent any potential spillover of organised crime into the US.
