Gotham isn’t an easy place to live in Gotham Knights, and it’ll be up to you – playing as Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood – to make it more comfortable for its citizens. The game isn’t particularly challenging in terms of pure difficulty, but there are a bunch of things that you should know in order to make your journey through the game easier.
So, here you have some useful tips you’ll need to know about the first time you’ll jump on Gotham Knights’ open world. Just read through our tips below to swing through Gotham’s streets like an experienced caped crusader.
Complete the Case Files asap
Case Files in Gotham Knights can be fairly complex and fascinating to explore. If you want to make the most of Case Files, you should start playing through them immediately.
That’s because if you play them after the main story, your characters’ level will be too high for you to fully enjoy them. The game doesn’t feature level scaling, so mobs in that specific mission will stay forever at their default level. That might sound comfy, but missions will soon get boring, if played at the wrong levels, and won’t be rewarding in terms of XP either.
Heroes on the bench
Gotham Knights allows you to switch between a roster of four playable characters. You might have already chosen your main character, but you don’t need to stick by them forever. That’s because the game levels up every character anytime the one you’re playing as does, even if they’re going to stay on the bench for a long time.
This means that, if you’re playing a lot of Nightwing, you won’t have to worry about getting back to Batgirl and having to start from a low level, just so you can see her narrative beats or play as her. Here’s a little something you’ll need to worry about, though: you’ll have to complete a few challenges for every character to unlock special abilities and projects for the most complex and precious pieces of equipment.
Fast travel
Fast travel is a staple in open-world games, and Gotham Knights doesn’t stray from that. Fast travel won’t be immediately available, and will take a few missions from Lucius Fox to make it yours. These missions will see you scan surveillance drones and register the Batfamily as an exception in their firewall, so you’ll be able to fly all over the city without being detected as threats.
Our tip here is to complete as many of these missions as you can at the beginning of the game, and unlock fast travel ASAP. That’s because the second half of the game will send you from one side of the map to another very quickly, and that’s already boring enough without having you moving around town on foot. With fast travel unlocked, you’ll be able to ease the pain of some of the more tedious missions in the main storyline.
Switch characters
As mentioned above, you can easily choose your preferred character from a roster of four, without any fear of major consequences. All the heroes level up at the same time and rack up points you can spend in their respective skill trees, with the sole exception of special abilities and equipment.
Switching between characters every now and then feels like a good idea, as it’s only by doing so that you’ll be able to unlock narrative beats focusing on each of them. These short cutscenes are available both in the open world and in the Belfry, and it’s worthwhile for you to explore, especially if you’re a DC fan. The good news is that you can’t miss any of them since they’ll unlock one after another even if you play them after the main story.
Use the workbench
At the Belfry, there’s an area where you can develop new pieces of armor and weapons. If you have pre-order the game, or purchased a special edition, it’s likely you’ll be just fine with the stuff you already have equipped for a while. At some point, it’ll become key that you check in on the workbench after every main story mission.
That’s because you’ll be able to put together all sorts of materials from chests, and you can use them for crafting purposes, whether it’s suits, weapons, or mods. Speaking of which, don’t forget to apply mods anytime you can. You’ll be able to install those if you have pieces of equipment of a fairly high rarity level, introducing bonuses like elemental effects that will prove useful against certain enemies.
