The Gossip Girl reboot has been cancelled after only two seasons and fans are devastated.
HBO Max and showrunner Josh Safran said goodbye to the Upper East Side as they announced the news on Thursday evening.
"We are very grateful to showrunner/executive producer Joshua Safran, and executive producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz for bringing us back to the Upper East Side and all the scandals at Constance Billard," HBO Max said in a statement.
"Although we are not moving forward with a third season of Gossip Girl, we thank them for the enticing love triangles, calculated backstabbing and impeccable fashion this series brought to a new audience."
The showrunner developed the reboot based on the Cecily von Ziegesar novels as well as the iconic original series.
Fans were heartbroken over the news and took to social media to react.
"u guys it’s not even funny gossip girl reboot was my fun little show like season 2 had been so entertaining," one user said.
Another disappointed fan added: "reading that Gossip Girl got cancelled when i was secretly addicted to it."
"if we all come together for the finale episode and boost the numbers to like millions even BILLIONS like we could get the season three like BLOW the finale viewership out of the water LISTEN!," one loyal fan posted.
The original show was developed by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, with both of them serving as the executive producers on the reboot.
CW aired the original version, which starred the likes of Blake Lively, Penn Badgley and Leighton Meester, from 2007 to 2012.
Kristen Bell reprised her role as the mysterious narrator Gossip Girl in the new series.
Stars include Jordan Alexander, Whitney Peak, Tavi Gevinson, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zión Moreno, Savannah Lee Smith, and Grace Duah.
The reboot follows the lives of Manhattan private schoolers nearly a decade after the end of the original series.
It was set in the same world as the original show and previous characters were freely referenced.
The new series didn't receive high ratings, with season one getting an average rating of 4.9 out of 10.
Safran also announced the news of the cancellation on his Instagram page with the 'heaviest of hearts'.
He wrote: "So here's the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce GOSSIP GIRL will not be continuing on HBO Max.
"The EPs and I will forever be grateful to the network and studio for their faith and support; the writers for their devious brains and dexterous talent; the superstar cast for being the greatest of collaborators and friends; and the crew for their hard work, dedication and love for the project. This was honestly the greatest set I ever worked on, top to bottom."
"We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill bottle, and so if this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs. Thank you for watching, and I hope you'll tune into the finale next Thursday to see how it all comes together. xoxo"
He concluded: "ps. A big thank you to all the GG fans around the world. You’re the reason we came back in the first place, and who knows, maybe the reason we will meet again. Much love."
