Gordon Strachan is set to lead the Dundee rebuild after the hammer blow of relegation to the Championship.
The ex-Scotland and Celtic boss has been working as technical director and overseeing the youth academy but will take a more hands-on in a bid to bounce straight back to the Premiership.
And one of his first and most important tasks will be to decide who occupies the dugout next season.
Mark McGhee and Simon Rusk are currently in charge but it is increasingly likely that they will be departing after Sunday’s final game with Livingston.
Strachan and McGhee are close and it was their friendship that helped saw the latter land the Dens Park job back in February, as he replaced James McPake.
Ironically, the change came after McPake had led the Dark Blues to back-to-back wins.
McGhee, however, was not helped by a six match touchline ban and Covid issues.
His team never won a game in 12 games and his first victory eventually came against Hibs team on Tuesday night.
But it was too little, too late as St Johnstone’s victory over Aberdeen saw them make an immediate return to the Championship.
Strachan’s promotion will also allow chief executive John Nelms to focus more on off-the-field projects and plans for their new stadium.
Former Hibs boss Jack Ross has a lot of admirers within the Dundee boardroom but it is understood he is now unlikely to become the new manager or head coach.
