Gordon Brown set for top honour in King's birthday list, reports say

GORDON Brown and three Tory MPs are set to receive honours in the King’s birthday honours list, according to reports.

The former Labour prime minister is expected to be awarded with a place in the Order of the Companions of Honour, The Times reported.

There are only 65 Companions of Honour at any one time, and there are currently three vacancies.

Membership of the order is reserved for people who have made a “major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time”, according to the royal family’s website.

Brown would join the likes of David Attenborough, Shirley Bassey, Elton John, JK Rowling, Margaret Atwood, Quentin Blake, and Paul McCartney in the order.

Politician members include Scottish LibDem Menzies Campbell, Scottish Tory Thomas Galbraith, and former Tory prime minister John Major.

Elsewhere in the King’s birthday list, which will only be published in full on Friday night, three Tory MPs and two Labour MPs are expected to receive honours.

Outgoing Conservative MPs James Morris, Richard Fuller, and Iain Stewart are all due to receive honours, according to The Times.

Labour MPs Wayne David and Karen Buck are also expected to join them on the honours list.

Elsewhere, Scots satirist Armando Iannucci, the creator of The Thick of It, is due to have his OBE upgraded to a CBE for services to film and television.
