GOP Rep. Perry Questions Secret Service Agent Selection Process

Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., chair of the House Freedom Caucus, speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, July 14, 2023. A federal judge is ordering Republican Rep. Scott Perry of Pen

During a recent hearing, GOP Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania raised concerns about the selection process of Secret Service agents, suggesting that merit might not be the primary factor in their assignment. Perry specifically questioned Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle about the physical capabilities of agents assigned to protect President Donald Trump, who is over six feet tall.

Perry inquired whether agents were assigned based on their physical ability to cover and carry the President if necessary. Cheatle responded by emphasizing that agents assigned to protectees are chosen based on their capabilities and training.

These questions reflect criticisms from some individuals on the right who have questioned whether female Secret Service agents assigned to Trump were sufficiently equipped to protect him due to their height difference compared to male agents.

Perry further pressed the issue by highlighting the potential challenges that could arise if there was a significant height difference between the agent and the protectee. Cheatle reiterated that the agents assigned to protectees are indeed capable of carrying out their duties effectively.
