Google pays incredible tribute to Scooby Doo's Velma as character 'comes out'

Search engine Google has celebrated the coming out story of popular Scooby Doo character, Velma Dinkley, with a proud animation.

On Wednesday October 5, Prime Video released a short clip of Velma interacting with her newest crush, female villain Coco Diablo, in the latest film, 'Trick or Treat Scooby Doo!'.

The Independent reports that the video went viral almost immediately online, as fans celebrated the confirmation of the character's sexuality - which has been speculated for a long time.

Velma's sexuality had previously been acknowledged by creatives on the Scooby Doo franchise, such as James Gunn, who wrote the earlier live-action movies.

However, this clip marked the official moment that Velma came out - and Google celebrated the landmark by engineering an LGBTQIA+-themed animation that plays whenever the search terms Velma, Velma Scooby Doo, Velma Dinkley or even just Dinkley are typed into the search bar.

The search prompts cause a burst of rainbow confetti, and various pride flags - including the official lesbian flag - to fly across the search results page.

Back in 2020, writer James Gunn tweeted that he had "tried" to make Velma a visible lesbian in the live-action movies - but claimed that the studio "just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)”.

Gunn added: "In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script."

You can see the out and proud character of Velma in the new Scooby Doo film, released on Prime Video on Tuesday, October 4.
