UPDATE July 22: A Google spokesperson recently reached out stating: "We’re actively working to fix an issue that is affecting media playback controls on Google Maps."

This confirms that the missing controls are indeed a bug. Unfortunately, there's no timeline on when we can expect a solution, but it will likely be a priority.
