Google Chrome users urged to install important update after security threat discovered

Google has issued an important update in Chrome to fix a security issue recently uncovered within the browser that could leave users vulnerable to hacking attempts.

Although the search giant has not yet released specific details on the bug in order to prevent it being exploited by hackers, the previously undiscovered security flaw could leave users open to malicious attacks. Such attacks could involve access to protected memory, causing a crash or running harmful code.

The bug was discovered by Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) on November 29, 2022, The Mirror reports. Google has now been forced to issue a fresh security update to fix the flaw, just days after releasing a new patch for the browser which contained fixes for 28 other security issues.

Google said: “Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.”

While Chrome should update automatically for most users, you can check that you have the latest version of the browser with the patch installed by opening the three-dot Chrome menu in the top right-hand corner of the page. Head to the 'Settings' menu and find 'About Chrome', and the browser will check for the most recent update.
