Google has lost one of the architects behind its modern artificial intelligence empire. After 27 years at the company, chief scientist Jeff Dean is leaving to launch a new AI startup backed by Alphabet, marking one of the most significant leadership changes in Google's history as competition in artificial intelligence reaches a fever pitch.
The departure is far more than a routine executive exit. Dean helped shape many of Google's defining technologies, from large-scale computing systems to TensorFlow and the Google Brain project, making him one of the industry's most influential engineers. His decision to co-found Discovery Loop alongside veteran Google engineer Sanjay Ghemawat comes as Google races to keep pace with rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic.
