Google AI sent hikers up 14,000ft mountain with too little food and water, police say

Google
  • Three hikers were rescued from California's Mount Shasta after relying on Google's Gemini AI to plan their route and packing list.
  • The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office said the AI advised the group to bring far less food and water than they needed for the trip.
  • The hikers became stranded in Mud Creek Canyon while descending, and one person suffered a knee injury before rangers located them the following morning.
  • Officials cautioned against relying solely on AI for expedition planning, advising climbers to consult local ranger stations for accurate safety details.
  • The incident occurred shortly before Google announced a promotional partnership with YouTuber MrBeast focused on using Gemini to survive harsh environments.
