Teens charged after two Elizabeth line staff members stabbed at Goodmayes station in north-east London

Two teenagers have been charged after staff members were stabbed in a bottle attack at an Elizabeth Line train station in north-east London.

The pair had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the attack at Goodmayes station on Wednesday night.

On Friday, the British Transport Police said the 16 and 17 year olds, who cannot be named due to their age, have each been charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article.

They were also charged with robbery in connection with an incident which occurred prior at a Tesco store in Goodmayes.

The "altercation" broke out between two males and the two staff members at around 10.30pm on Wednesday.

One of the staff members, aged in his 30s, suffered a laceration after being struck to the head with a bottle, and was also stabbed.

The second staff member, in his 40s, was stabbed under his arm.

"They are both being treated in hospital for their injuries which are believed not to be life threatening," said BTP in a statement released on Thursday.

An update on Friday said those attacked remain in hospital but with non life-threatening injuries.

Officers were sent to the scene and searched the area on Wednesday night.

The two boys, who are both from Dagenham, are due to appear at Highbury Youth Court on Friday.

Detective inspector Paul Attwell from British Transport Police’s major, serious and organised crime team, said: “We have stepped up patrols in the area to provide a visible reassurance to the public and those members of staff working on the rail network.

"Violence in any form will not be tolerated and we will act swiftly to ensure all those working and travelling on the rail network are safe.”

Goodmayes Station was shut overnight while forensics officers carried out an investigation.

It reopened in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Detectives are appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident or events leading up to it to get in touch as soon as possible.

"Any information could help police establish the circumstances surrounding this incident," said a BTP spokesperson.

Goodmayes lies on the stretch of the Elizabeth Line that links central London with Shenfield.

Siwan Hayward, director of security, policing and enforcement at TfL, said: "This was an appalling and dangerous attack on our colleagues, who remain in hospital.

"Everyone should be able to go about their day without fear or intimidation and we do not tolerate any violence, aggression or threatening behaviour towards railway staff or customers.

"We are working closely with the British Transport Police and MTR, the operator of the Elizabeth line, to bring the perpetrator to justice and rid the railways of such violent offenders."
