Kate Garraway looked startled as she halted Good Morning Britain to break news of an alarming hike in the energy price cap.
Kate, who this week celebrated another National Television Award nomination for Best Authored Documentary, was at the helm of Friday's show alongside Adil Ray, when the news that the cap is going up to £3,549, as the cost of living crisis tightens its grip on the country.
The presenting duo were discussing something different when the news came in, forcing Kate to immediately change her train of thought as the Breaking News banner appeared behind her and Adil and across the bottom of the screen. Kate said: "Some breaking news, it's the one you've been expecting; the energy regulator Ofgem has, within the last few seconds, just announced that the energy price cap will rise from £1,971 to £3,549."

Giving his reaction, Adil commented: "So what does this mean? This means that millions of households will ace an 80% rise in energy bills from October." Attempting to get to grips with the announcement and the serious repercussions, as a frown crossed her face, Kate continued: "Well, the contest to decide the next Conservative leader and prime minister reaches its final stages, so pressure is mounting for a solution."
There was a huge and furious reaction to the news on GMB's Twitter, where a video of the announcement was posted. One angry viewer replied: "Does anyone actually live in toy town with toy town money?? Because I thought we lived in the real world with below average wages! Why would ofgem do this why isn’t the government stopping this, it’s a fact we’ve been sunk."
Another responded: "How can this be allowed to happen ? We are being controlled . . .I'm very good at budgeting , only buy what I can afford ,and even then, question if I need it . But we are talking about gas and electricity , bare necessities , needed to survive . I am frightened & angry."
