Good Morning Britain's Ben Shephard tells Kate Garraway to 'be quiet' as he is branded 'patronising' by viewers

Things got heated this morning as Good Morning Britain presenter Ben Shephard told his co-host Kate Garraway to 'be quiet' as he indulged in a spot of 'mansplaining', according the viewers. The two presenters, who have both been on the breakfast TV scene for many years, were chatting with The Mirror's Darren Lewis about all things football when Ben, 47, ordered 55-year-old Kate to stop talking.

Ben and Kate were discussing last night's controversial Japanese goal against Spain, which resulted in Germany being knocked out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Just moments after Japan's equaliser, the team scored another goal which was initially disallowed as it was deemed to have gone out of play, The Mirror reports.

It was then decided that Kaoru Mitoma had kept the ball in play before Ao Tanaka sent the ball into the net just 142 seconds after Ritsu Doan's equaliser. FIFA has since explained the decision, which has caused great controversy as one camera angle appeared to show the ball out of play.

The topic was hotly discussed on this morning's instalment of GMB, with Ben Shephard using tape and a mini football to explain to Kate Garraway and viewers watching along at home why the goal was given. As Ben tried to put things into perspective, Kate interjected, but was then told by her co-star that she 'needed to be quiet for a second'.

The presenter could then be seen folding her arms and shaking her head slightly, as she said to the camera, laughing: "Oh, nobody told me that!"

The show's guests could be heard chuckling, as former Strictly contestant Jacqui Smith jokingly told Kate: "Girls don't know about football, be quiet."

"Oh, Jacqui, stop it," said Ben. "Don't encourage her!"

Whilst Ben's remarks appeared to be said in jest, some were not happy, and accused him of talking down to Kate on social media. Annie wrote on Twitter: "Very patronising Ben! And Kate, you're making all women look like fools when it comes to football and this is going to make men think & continue to believe all women haven't a clue about football!"

Brenda Kelly said: "Ben Shephard you need to apologise for being rude to Kate telling her to be quiet and calling her woman! Who do you think you are!"

"Disgusting disrespect from Ben this morning towards Kate," wrote Rebecca Knight. "Not only is he interrupting her many times, he’s being disrespectful and sexist 'Move your paperwork Woman!!' he said."

Meanwhile, other viewers found the exchange hilarious. Tracey Jo wrote: "Kate & Ben are brilliant together. Especially when you throw in Iain & Jacqui."

"Ben telling Kate to shut up has made my morning," tweeted Mrs Lingard. "They are hilarious! Love them both."
