Good Morning Britain's Alex Beresford lands new TV job after Piers Morgan row

Good Morning Britain 's Alex Beresford is stepping down from his role at ITV West Country for an exciting new role.

The weather presenter, who famously clashed with Piers Morgan over Meghan Markle, has delivered forecasts across the South West for 17 years, more recently alongside his prominent role on GMB.

Now, the 40-year-old will be taking up a position with the ITV national news team, BristolLive reports.

Alex said in a statement to ITV: "It's been over a decade since I've been working across the region and it's been the most amazing time.

"It's been a special part of my life and I'm going to miss it. I'm a Bristol boy through and through.

"The West Country is an amazing place to work. I'd never been to Cornwall before I started working at ITV West Country and I got to explore one of the best parts of the world in my opinion."

Alex hit headlines last year when his clash with then-GMB host Piers saw the latter storm off the stage during a live broadcast.

Alex told Piers his comments about Meghan following her Oprah Winfrey interview were "way off the mark".

Piers had said he didn't believe Meghan when she said she was refused help with her mental health after telling palace officials she felt suicidal during her first pregnancy.

Piers later stepped down from his role on the breakfast programme, and doubled down on his criticism of Meghan as he addressed his exit.

Speaking outside his London home in March last year, he said: "I had a good chat with ITV and we agreed to disagree.

"I'm just going to take it easy and see how we go.

"I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that's entirely their right.

"I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.

"If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it."

He added: "I think it's fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they've cancelled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge.

"I would call it a temporary hibernation."

Piers later said he had walked off GMB that day to avoid headbutting Alex.

He said at an awards ceremony in September: "I shouldn’t have walked off when I did... because the deputy stand-in weather guy says something annoying.

"It was either that or give him a Glasgow kiss. I decided that wouldn’t go down very well."

Alex said after Piers quit his presenting role : "There is so much that could be said. Piers' departure sincerely wasn't the conclusion I was hoping for.

"Over the last few years, Piers and I have had a lively, cheeky on-air relationship. We both wanted to be on the show Tuesday morning, and from our very public conversations on Twitter, we both knew how strongly our opinions differed on the treatment of Harry and Meghan pre and post the interview that has split the world.

"I hoped we could reach a place of understanding. It's sad that we weren't able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree.

"I didn't want him to quit, but I did want him to listen.

"Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He's given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful. I wish him well!"
