The Golden Globes made a rowdy return to television after a year in the wilderness, with tearjerking wins, shock losses and some truth bombs aimed squarely at the organisers — as it happened.

The Fabelmans wins best picture — Drama

As we mentioned earlier, this is a special one for Steven Spielberg, who won the best director role for the film earlier.
Spielberg mentions that while giving him the award, presenter Quentin Tarantino said that 'John Cassavetes would be so proud'.
"That's because I was John Cassavetes' PA. I got him coffee, I ran out to delis I did all kinds of stuff and that’s why I’m so kind to my PAs because I know what it’s like," Spielberg says.

Best picture — Musical/Comedy goes to the Banshees of Inisherin

Now to the final two awards for the night.
The Banshees of Inesherin wins the best picture for a musical/comedy.
It's the third time the film has won an award this Globes.

Even the afterparties have a different look this year

In previous years, massive afterparties have been held by Netflix, Fox, Amazon, HBO, NBCUniversal and Warner Bros.
But, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the party scene will look quieter this year.
This year, parties are taking place on both the weekend before and after.
Here's what's planned:
- Netflix hosted a "Celebration Toast" on Sunday, with no mention of the Globes.
- Warner Bros. Discovery hosted a party to celebrate Elvis Presley's birthday, with no official mention of the awards.
- The BAFTA Tea party is scheduled for January 14.
- Billboard is hosting a celebration at the Beverly Hilton pool right after the ceremony.
The Hollywood Reporter credits budget cuts and layoffs for these changes.
House of the Dragon wins best drama series

And the Golden Globe goes to... House of the Dragon.
This is the first award for the series tonight.
Milly Alcock is representing the Aussies on stage alongside Emma D'Arcy.
Both play Rhaenyra at different ages in the show.

Abbott Elementary wins best musical/comedy series

Abbott Elementary has taken out the Globe for best musical/comedy series.
We've already seen Quinta Brunson on stage this show when she won best actress for this series.
"I created this show because I love comedy," Brunson says.

Eddie Murphy references the Will Smith slap

After praise from award presenters Tracy Morgan and Jamie Lee Curtis, Eddie Murphy chose his acceptance speech to share the three rules that ensured his success and share a little joke with the audience.
"I followed this my entire career; pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith's wife's name out your f**king mouth!" the comedian says to roars of laughter from the audience.

And the winner is Kevin Costner for best actor — drama series

Eddie Murphy wins an honourary award

Eddie Murphy is set to receive Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement.
He's been nominated for six Globes and won once for his performance in Dreamgirls.
Previous honourees include Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey and Meryl Streep.
The White Lotus wins best limited series, anthology series or television motion picture

Mike White is accepting the award for The White Lotus, and he's tearful.
"I was going to give this speech in Italian but I'm too drunk...there was no food!" he says.
He says he's still choked up after Jennifer Coolidge thanked him in his speech.
White says this moment is gratifying because "everybody passed on this show," hinting at there being actors in the room who turned down roles.
He motions to thank the White Lotus collaborators behind him, "I would take a bullet for you guys, not in the heart but maybe the foot."

Evan Peters takes out best actor — limited series, anthology series or television motion picture

Evan Peters wins his first Golden Globe for playing Jeffrey Dahmer.
He has thanked Ryan Murphy, as well as his loved ones.
"I want to thank everyone who watched the show, it was difficult to make, it was difficult to watch but I hope some good came out of it," he says.

This one goes to Jennifer Coolidge for her role as Tanya in The White Lotus.
She is getting emotional, thanking members of the industry for keeping her going with "little roles", shouting out Ryan Murphy, until The White Lotus came along.
She then went on to praise White Lotus creator Mike White saying, "Mike White you gave me a new beginning, you gave me hope…my neighbors are speaking to me!"

Steven Spielberg is walking through the crowd grabbing everyone's hand, it feels like an emotional moment.
This is a special one for Spielberg because The Fabelmans is his own story.
"I've been hiding this story since I was 17. I told this story in parts and parcels all throughout my career. ET has parts of this story, Close Encounters has parts of this story... but I never had the courage to hit this story head on," he says.

Best screenplay — motion picture goes to Martin McDonagh

Martin McDonagh takes out this win for The Banshees of Inesherin, the second Globe for the film tonight.
"I wrote this film for Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson," he says.
McDonagh’s speech marks the second time that Banshees of Inesherin scene stealer Jenny the Donkey has been mentioned tonight.
“I was hoping Jenny the donkey might get a nomination but she’s a woman and this is the Globes so...” McDonagh quipped.

Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael addresses the troubled past of the awards show

We touched on it earlier, but Golden Globes host and comedian Jerrod Carmichael addressed the elephant in the room head-on and immediately.
After telling everyone to quieten down, Carmichael welcomed the audience to the 80th annual Golden Globe awards.
"I am your host, Jerrod Carmichael," he said.
"And I'll tell you why I'm here.
"I'm here because I'm black."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is addressing the Globes

In a pre-recorded Video, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the free people of the free world have been the best to Ukraine in the past year.
"The war is not over yet but the tide is turning, and it is already clear who will win," Mr Zelenskyy says.
"There will be no third world war, it is not a trilogy.
"Ukraine will stop the Russian aggression on our land and we will make it together in the whole free world and we hope that you will be with us on ... the day of our victory."
