Gogglebox's Pete and Sophie take shot at ITV over The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe

It was always going to be on the cards and on Friday night, the Gogglebox cast had their say on ITV's much talked about drama The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe, with Pete and Sophie Sandiford not being too kind about its title.

The four part series based on the very real life events of 2002 when Seaton Carew man John Darwin, having found himself in mountains of debt, decided the best option would be to fake his own death, with the help of his wife Anne. John devised a plan that would see him paddle out to sea close to his home before arriving back on shore and abandoning his kayak and paddle in the sea, with both later found as police told Anne it was 'pretty much case closed,' as far as they were concerned.

But, while the police were convinced that John was a goner, having spent some time camping in the wild, he ended up living right under their noses, as he moved into a bedsit right next door to the family home. The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe, followed John and Anne Darwin's story from his 'disappearance,' to them being caught out by an incriminating photo right up until Anne's release from prison, two months after John was freed.

The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe got the Gogglebox treatment as the show continued its new series on Friday night, with their watching of the real life drama starting right at the beginning with its opening titles. Reacting to them from their sofa, popular siblings Pete and Sophie had a rather interesting take on the title. Sophie remarked: "The Thief...His Wife...and The Canoe, what an odd....," as Pete interrupted: "It sounds like a s**t porno!" Agreeing with her brother, Sophie replied it does, it does yeah."

Newcomers for this series, Scottish friends Roisin and Joe also had their say on 'the canoe man' with Roisin making the very fair observation: "You know when something starts at the seaside on ITV, s**t's going to go down. Given the tragedy that's struck in the likes of Broadchurch and The Bay, she's got that pretty much spot on.
