Gogglebox hit with Ofcom complaints after star's 'rude' Coronation remarks

Gogglebox has been slapped with over 80 Ofcom complaints after its coverage of the Coronation sparked a backlash.

The latest episode of the Channel 4 series saw the armchair critics tune in to watch the historic occasion, which saw King Charles crowned alongside Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony watched by more than 20 million people across the UK. The events were enjoyed by many of the show's favourite families, with Jenny and Lee and Stephen and Daniel even donning their own royal attire to watch the event.

But some other Gogglebox stars were less impressed by the celebrations, with one pair who recently joined the show causing a stir with their comments. Glasgow couple Roisin and Joe's response to the coverage sparked a fierce debate among viewers at home, racking up a total of 88 Ofcom complaints.

As they sat down to watch the Coronation clips, Joe turned to Roisin and said: "Do you want to hear my pledge? You can stick your Coronation up your a***, you can stick your Coronation up your a***."

Many viewers were left outraged at the remarks, taking to social media to brand Joe's chant "disrespectful", "rude" and "vile". Some even called for Roisin and Joe to be removed from the show after the "shameful" remarks - although others disagreed, praising the pair for speaking "common sense".

However, the complaints directed at Gogglebox paled in comparison to the most complained-about TV moment in the week from May 6 to May 15. A total of 4,087 ITV viewers got in touch with Ofcom to complain about remarks made by Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh during the broadcaster's Coronation coverage, in which she called the Buckingham Palace balcony "terribly white".

"We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony," Adjoa commented. "I am very struck by that. I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking: 'What are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?'"

Meanwhile, Good Morning Britain was the third most complained-about show of the week, receiving 52 complaints following Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu's remarks on the ITV programme saying that the Royal Family were not "a source of inspiration". Dr Shola said: "A Royal Family is the face of the British monarchy, an institution that symbolises the entrenched structural inequalities that have placed British subjects in a chokehold of, you know, peasant mentality and servitude."
