Gogglebox fans pledge support to Pete Sandiford as he tears up during show

Gogglebox fans rushed to support one of the show's stars after he broke down in tears on the show. Pete Sandiford teared up during Friday’s (May 20) episode of the show as he and his sister Sophie watched a touching episode of The Repair Shop.

The siblings from Blackpool tuned into the particularly poignant showing which featured a piece of history from World War Two, as reported by OK. The dad of one, 26, teared up during the episode as fans flocked to social media to say they would also be "sobbing like him".

Pete and Sophie watched as Gary Fisher brought the hosts of The Repair Shop a Jewish prayer book owned by his grandparents, Emanuel and Gisela. Gary's grandparents had been unable to flee Austria after it was annexed by Germany in 1938 and were sent to Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War.

"They were in a concentration camp and they never knew when their time was going to be up, but they had their religion, they had their faith and that must have been a real comfort to them to never give up," said Gary. Sadly, many other members of Gary’s family didn’t survive the camps, but his grandparents did and at the end of the war they were liberated along with the book.

He added: "My grandfather wrote a poem, but, when they were liberated, he asked people that were liberated to sign the book, so there are about 50 signatures. It’s so fragile – I think it needs to go somewhere where it can be seen by others." Pete was emotional as Gary returned to The Repair Shop to see the book after being restored.

He told Sophie: “Why am I already welling up here? I've not even seen the *****y book," to which she replied: "That's sent you under, hasn't it? Awww."

Sophie eventually cracked herself at Gary's overwhelmed reaction to the beautifully-restored book, telling her brother: “God, he is breaking my heart.” Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts: “Think it's quite lucky I don't watch The Repair Shop - I'd be sobbing like @Petesandiford every week! #Gogglebox.”

Another said: “It's enough to make a grown man cry @Petesandiford.” A third added: “I was right with you guys on this one. I think this episode of #therepairshop will be one of my most favourite.”
