GMP warning as person spotted ice skating on frozen pond after Solihull tragedy

Greater Manchester Police has issued a warning after a person was spotted ice skating on a frozen pond in a park in Stockport following the Solihull lake tragedy.

In a social media post this morning (December 16), officers said they had been 'made aware' of the incident in the grounds of Bramall Hall. A member of staff 'had to remove a member of public from the grounds' after he was caught ice skating on the icy ponds in the park, police said.

Officers said his actions were extremely dangerous and warned others not to go into or onto frozen ponds or lakes. The post came just a day after the four young boys, aged six to 11, who tragically died after falling into an icy lake in Solihull were named and pictured.

On the GMP Stockport Facebook page, police said: "We have been made aware of an incident at Bramall Hall where staff had to remove a member of the public from the grounds after he was caught ice skating on the ponds in the park.

"After the tragic news in Solihull earlier this week, we cannot overstate how dangerous the actions of this member of the public were. Going onto frozen ponds, reservoirs, lakes and canals is dangerous and can have fatal results.

"It might be tempting to walk or play on the frozen water but the ice can easily break. The temperature of the water is cold enough to take your breath away and lead to drowning."

In the Babbs Mill nature reserve tragedy, brothers Samuel, six, and Finlay Butler, eight, both lost their lives along with their 11-year-old cousin Thomas Stewart and hero friend Jack, who had tried to save the youngsters on Sunday afternoon (December 11). Finlay, Samuel and Thomas were pulled from the freezing water and rushed to hospital where eight-year-old Finlay and 11-year-old Thomas died a short time later.

Ten-year-old Jack Johnson also tragically died on Sunday, with police confirming that the youngest, six-year-old Samuel, lost his fight on Wednesday. Finlay, Samuel and Thomas' family paid tribute to their 'beautiful boys' saying they are 'devastated' at their loss.

Thomas’ older brother also remembered his sibling and cousin ahead of the sad news yesterday that Sam had died. Extensive underwater searches were carried out at the lake following the tragedy, though West Midlands Police said they have now concluded.
