GMB's Susanna Reid details morning habit that surprises Lorraine and Dr Hilary

Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid left Lorraine Kelly in shock after she revealed a rather alarming morning habit on her talk show on Monday, January 23. The 52-year-old breakfast presenter appeared on the show after her hosting duties alongside ITV's favourite medic Dr Hilary Jones to talk about sleep - dressed for the occasion in a matching fuschia pink pyjama set.

With Susanna starting each day at 3.45am, Lorraine questioned whether coffee was a vital part to her morning. She said: "Now, when you get up that early you do drink a lot of coffee. I know what it is like. You drink coffee to get through. How many cups of coffee do you think you get through?"

Much to the 63-year-old's surprise, Susanna revealed the whopping number of cups she drinks: eight, sometimes nine.

She told Lorraine: "Well I thought it was eight [cups] but apparently this morning, Harry, in the green room, and Mark who were doing my coffee said I did nine coffees this morning." The host, aghast, said: "Nine! Susanna, nine! How do you ever nap with nine coffees?"

She replied: "I'm highly caffeinated" before reassuring the pair in the studio: "I don't drink a full mug of coffee - it is probably a couple of sips, but they're brilliant in the green room. They just keep 'em coming."

And while Dr Hilary deemed the amount as "quite a lot", he weighed in on the benefits of coffee in the morning. He said: "To wake up it's a stimulant, it mentally gets you alert, but eight or nine is quite a lot."

Susanna added that she halts her caffeine intake at midday and wouldn't even touch a cup of tea after 12, "because that would interrupt my sleep".

And while coffee is a great way of waking yourself up in the morning, Susanna revealed a few tips for getting a good night's sleep. She advised not to obsess over broken sleep and to make sure that you are resting - even if you're not sleeping. The second is doing visualisation techniques of relaxing each body part at a time.

Speaking of her own experiences of broken sleep, especially after the latest episode of Happy Valley, Dr Hilary advised Lorraine that preparation for sleep is key.

"It's all the cues: Wearing pyjamas, not watching the shining last thing at night, a nice quiet romantic book, some nice quiet music. Make sure the sleeping environment is really conducive to sleep. Warm, right temperature bedroom. Dark, blackout blinds so there's no light comng in and quiet."

He added that looking at your phone before bed should also be kept to a minimum: "If you're scrolling on your phone, it's blue light. Blue light is really activating for the alerting system of the brain. TV is blue light, screens are blue lights and they're doing the opposite of melatonin, the sleep hormone, and keeping you awake."
