GMB's Laura Tobin issues emergency weather warning and hits back at 'scaremongering' accusations

Good Morning Britain weather presenter Laura Tobin denied she was scaremongering as she issued a 'national emergency' warning on the potentially record breaking temperatures for Monday and Tuesday.

On Friday, the GMB star predicted 'hundreds if not thousands' of fatalities as many parts of the UK get set to see temperatures well in excess of 30 degrees, with central and western locations even tipped to experience conditions of 40 degrees plus, which would beat the existing UK record of 38.7.

Laura and other TV meteorologists have come in for criticism from viewers over the last few days, with critics saying the high temperature s are 'just summer,' and that people should be take advantage of the hot weather without concern. However, a defiant Laura hit out she was causing unnecessary panic, as temperatures were predicted to be even higher than when she delivered her forecast before the weekend.

Laura joined GMB hosts Ed Balls and Ranvir Singh to give a number of weather bulletins throughout Monday's show, after many Brits had a restless night due to the heat and, speaking at the stat of one of the, she said: "People are saying 'oh this is just summer, get out and enjoy it.' This is not the weather to get out and try and enjoy it and this isn't summer; summer temperatures are 23, 24 degrees and yes, in other countries they have these temperatures, but the infrastructures are built...you know the engineers built the road and the rail and the houses to keep people cool and not melt. In this country we're just not built for it."

She added: "Anytime we go over 35 degrees, which is exceptionally rare, excess deaths increase massively, so that is why it's a national emergency, that's why I'm in the studio to report on all the details. And honestly, I'm not scaremongering, this is exceptionally serious."

Laura also warned that those people expecting cooler nights would be in for a shock as some areas would still be subject to temperatures of around 30 degrees.
