Kate Garraway has shared the "distressing" moment that she watched her husband fall out of his wheelchair.
Discussing the moment on Good Morning Britain on Friday, the presenter told of how she was forced to seek alternative transport to get her poorly husband, Derek Draper, home from hospital. The topic of whether taxis should be sent to 999 calls came about due to long waiting times for ambulances and other hospital transport.
That was when Kate gave input of her own experience. She said that she decided to travel home from the hospital with him in a taxi, as he was "in pain" and "distressed" and the wait for a mobility service was too long.

While the taxi was wheelchair safe, Derek still managed to fall out of his chair as the vehicle hit a bump in the road. Luckily, she had encountered a friendly taxi driver who helped her get her poorly husband back into his seat.
Kate added that other taxi drivers may not have been able to do that. Furthermore, the point that taxi drivers are unlikely trained the way paramedics are also came up.
Explaining her choice to use a taxi, Kate said: "He was in a lot of pain, so it wasn't sustainable to wait. We took a cab home from the hospital, went over a speed bump and he slipped out of the wheelchair. It's hard to deal with."
Kate added an update on how Derek was doing after the incident as she said: "I should say Derek was fine by the way. Distressed, but fine."
Former political advisor Derek is said to be the worst affected living covid patient in the UK after spending 13 months in hospital, while he continues to receive care at home. Since contracting the pandemic virus, in 2020, Derek has continued to suffer with mobility and communication issues as well as major health problems.
