GMB host Martin Lewis fights back tears over haunting memories of mum's tragic death

Good Morning Britain host Martin Lewis pulled at the heart strings of viewers on Wednesday morning when he opened up about his mother's tragic death when he was a child, admitting that he relates to Prince William and Harry.

The ITV star, 50, became emotional and fought back the tears as he shed light on his mum's tragic passing, after she died in a horror car crash - much like William and Harry's beloved mother, Princess Diana.

On Wednesday's instalment of Good Morning Britain, Martin sat alongside co-host Susanna Reid as they discussed the Queen's upcoming funeral next Monday. The pair shared their sadness about witnessing royal brothers William and Harry go through such loss again, 25-years after the tragic death of their mother.

After discussing how difficult it was to watch Prince William and Prince Harry walk behind the Queen's hearse, Martin reluctantly offered insight into his own mother's death, admitting that it brings back memories of watching them walk solemnly behind their mother's coffin in 1997.

Martin also said that he 'truly relates' to the brother's because he was the same age as Harry when his own mother died tragically.

The emotional host explained: "I mentioned this earlier, and I wasn't going to say on air, but Diana's death resonates with me very powerfully as someone who lost his mother at the same age as Harry was at the time.

"The road accident - I find it very difficult to watch. Thank goodness I wasn't forced to walk behind my mother's coffin. I didn't even go. It does bring back some memories," he added before choking up.

Martin then became visibly emotional, before asking Susanna to 'carry on' without him while he took a moment to compose himself.

"I know Martin. When events like this come up, which are very triggering of private grief, we totally understand," Susanna said as she comforted Martin.

After fighting back the tears, ITV fans flocked to shower Martin with love and admiration.

"Very brave of Martin Lewis to tell his story during such an emotional time. I'm sure his mum would have been so proud of the man he turned out to be," gushed one Good Morning Britain viewer.

"Tearing up watching GMB over Martin Lewis talking about his mum. This must be a lot for him right now," another echoed.

"Awhhh poor Martin! He's such a sweetie. That's so sad about his mum," someone else tweeted.

While a fourth gushed: "Gorgeous moment, although steeped in pain and trauma. Martin, your mum would look at you now with such admiration. Well done for being so vulnerable and brave."

It comes as Martin made his long-awaited comeback to Good Morning Britain on Wednesday.

The Money Saving Expert took to Twitter on Tuesday to confirm he would be return to the ITV show to discuss the Royal family, as well as the cost of living crisis.

Martin usually fronts the regular show section Money Monday but failed to appear for his regular slot on the show this week following the Queen's passing.
