Good Morning Britain viewers were left pleading for Richard Madeley to leave the show today after a series of awkward gaffes - and a cringe question to a Labour MP asking them to "define what a woman is".
The 65-year-old presenter had joined Kate Garraway for the Easter holidays as they spoke to Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson.
As the interview drew to a close, Richard decided to ask a rambling question to see how "in touch" she was with the electorate.
Richard said: "It's been a question - particularly to Labour commentators because no one's given a straight answer over the last two weeks to the question. How do you define a woman? There appears to be a Labour party strategy not to answer the question. Do you think you could buck that trend?"
"I'll do my best," she replied. "I'm a woman, I think most people understand that the core meaning is adult female. But of couse there are people who go through a legal process to be recognised as women and it's right that they're given support given they face discrimination and prejudice.
"So I think we need to be clear when we have this discussion that we do it in a way that's respectful of others, that's done properly with support. Because there's been so much discussion around this that I don't think helps anyone, really."
Richard was clearly surprised by her clear answer, but viewers weren't impressed with his question in the first place, with one tweeting: "God Richard, no one f***ing cares what labour define a woman as, is that really the most important thing to be asking right now? Just as bad as repeatedly asking Ukrainian women if they would shoot someone if they had to #gmb #goodmorningbritain."
While another commented: "This question is pointless and it is getting very old and cringy now. Let’s just not. #GMB #goodmorningbritain."
A third wrote: "For f*** sake that dinosaur Richard Madeley is doubling down on this f***ing gender question again. #gmb get shut of this embarrassment."
"Has Richard just been caught out by a straight answer that he wasn't expecting #gmb," another commented.
It comes after Richard was criticised after questioning why rape was a weapon of war.
Richard and Kate had been discussing the latest horrifying allegations that Russian troops have used rape as a 'weapon of war' against Ukrainian civilians with Chip Chapman, Former Senior British Adviser to US central command.
The UK's ambassador to Ukraine said yesterday she was aware of reports of women and girls being raped in front of their families, describing it as a "deliberate act of subjugation".
After discussing the heartbreaking testimony uncovered by human rights groups, Richard had asked: "Chip, we've said something that was widely reported this morning that rape was used as a weapon of war. How exactly is rape a weapon of war?"
In response, Chip said: "Well, it's just trying to impose some sort of will upon the enemy as it's mentioned in the Second World War, it's absolutely horrific. And if you've got compromised morality [...] with those with weapons you've got a lethal combination for the future. It's absolutely disgraceful and people need to be taken to account."
But viewers were not impressed with Richard's question, with one writing: "Richard Madeley on #gmb has just asked, 'How exactly is rape a weapon of war?' ?????!!!!!!!"
While another commented: "Madeley, 'how is rape a weapon of war?' What a d***!!! #GMB."
