A new analysis of more than 300 million U.S. patient records found that people with type 2 diabetes taking GLP-1 drugs had about 31% lower odds of macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. That association appeared only after researchers accounted for other health conditions.
The finding comes from a research summary released by the American Academy of Ophthalmology on Oct. 6, ahead of the academy's 130th annual meeting, held Oct. 9-12 in New Orleans. It is an observational study presented at a meeting, not a peer-reviewed paper, and it does not show that the drugs protect the eyes.
