Cancer is a leading cause of premature mortality globally. A new population based study on 36 types of cancer has found that about 70 per cent of the premature deaths that happened in 2020 due to cancer were preventable through primary or secondary intervention and 30 per cent were treatable due to curative treatment. According to the new The Lancet Global Health research of the total deaths, 2.9 million were in men, while 2.3 million were in women. The study is based on the data obtained from the GLOBOCAN 2020 database on cancer mortality from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) for analysis.
The IARC conducts and coordinates research into the causes of cancer and is an intergovernmental agency under the World Health Organization of the United Nations.
