Champagne problems. 2022 is just a few short days away and while many celebrate the incoming new year with the aid of some bubbly, it appears as though that part of the festivities might be threatened due to a global champagne shortage.

Recent reports shared that the shortage is a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

During a recent interview with Fox Business, Senior Editor of Wine Spectator magazine, Alison Napjus shared that “it could be tough to find some of your favorite labels this year” because of severe disruptions within the champagne industry largely related to the pandemic.

This includes a shortage of truck drivers, labels, bottles, and more.

Napjus further explained: “It’s not even just that basic transportation issue. We’re also looking at things like shortages of the cage that goes on top of your bottle, labels, boxes to put wine in. So you put that all together with the huge increase in demand we’ve seen for champagne this year [and] for other sparkling wines and of course, the holiday season, and it could be tough to find some of your favorite labels this year.”

Earlier this month, it was reported that the U.S. is currently facing a champagne shortage that is expected to last for the next several years.

At the time, Michael Bilello, senior vice president of communications and marketing of Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America, told Fox Business that the rising costs of production could trickle down to an increased price for consumers.

"As the cost of business and challenges of doing business impact the wine and spirits industry, consumers are going to see that on the shelves or their bars and restaurants," Bilello said.

Of course, New Year’s Eve is known for people raising a glass to properly bid adieu to the current year, making this problem personal for many.
